Repeat Leaving Cert in Dublin?

    Hi,

So I'm in my first year in university. And I hate absolutely hate my course.

I want to defer for a year, and repeat a leaving cert, then go do the course I originally wanted to do if I get the points.

Can anyone please suggest schools where I can repeat the Leaving? Preferably in the city centre. I live in drogheda. And can only travel by train as it's only 100€ for a student month ticket.

I know the institute is amazing, but I can't afford it, I'm on a Susi grant. And if I take on a new course, I'll have to pay 6k and take a loan.

So, I need a place where I can repeat it, cheap if possible. Like no more than 500€.

    Thanks

Could you organise an internal transfer? That is what I did. Your Leaving Certificate points and grades from your course are taken into account. Many colleges also take into account that you hate the course and will have to repeat first year. Research your colleges reduced fees. If its your first transfer, it could be only a small amount more than your current fees. It was 500 euros in my case.

I was going to the say the Institute as I went there myself. Other repeat schools I know are Plunkett's in Drumcondra (not sure about the place, Ashfield College as you would have heard off the radio, Ringsend and Pearse College.

Good luck with it OP. I personally think you should do a PLC.

Hey, I'm in maynooth, and I just really don't like it, the quality of lectures, and etc. Plus, the course that I want to do, is not offered there.

And about a plc, it's a huge risk, barely anyone progresses into university from plc. So I'll just rather do the leaving again. Too bad there's no cheap schools where I can repeat in Dublin, meaning that I'll have to travel for hours again.

O'Connell School, Rathmines College, Plunket College, Pearse College - none of those will break the bank and all get excellent results. There are plenty of others, many with small classes which are great for making progress.

    Hey,

I don't mind looking up myself, but if you can tell me, which one is like not more than a 30min walk from Connolly Station? Not that I mind walking much, but it takes the train to get to Dublin 50 mins, plus I walk to the station for another 30 mins, so I just really want to minimise the time it takes getting to school.

That's not strictly true about barely any PLC students getting in. Official word is 10% of places. But it can be a bit more too. Some places are indeed competitive. But some places (e.g. TCD science places through PLCs) don't always fill up.

The PLC colleges have great links to the ITs and universities. I'd recommend looking at these options before committing to repeating.

What areas are you looking to study in? Here is a link to look at college courses that accept PLCs. Drop down the institution and then click go. A new tab will open up with all the courses in that institution that accept PLC students.

Of those I listed, O'Connell School would be a 15 minute walk at most from Connolly (once you finally get out of the station).

There may well be somewhere closer to your home, or along your route.

I would also suggest you not rule out the PLC route.

Basically any extra information has been mentioned here ahead of me, kudos to those involved.

I have heard the same about Maynooth unfortunately. I know many people who transferred to my university (Dublin City University). However, I know plenty of people who are in Maynooth and love it. Good lecturers can be hard to come by anywhere.

I wouldn't say that is strictly true about PLC's. Many people in PLC's don't want to progress to college, university, level 8 degrees anyway. PLC colleges have great links with universities. I know of one in Dublin City University who came from a PLC college in Ballsbridge and is now doing Computer Applications. I know of another who went to DIFE and is now studying a medical field.

All these are good. Although I know of three people who went to Plunket's, two of who did worse the second time around and one who did amazing. Really down to your work ethic I guess.
