Was looking at buying something for a friend on amazon uk. They won't take paypal and they ask you to add a bank account. Is that safe and can you buy without having your account number held as it apparently would be by adding account.

In Amazon you can use a credit/debit card to pay, the take payment after item is posted, after that you can remove the card from Amazon, if you don't want to save it, but it's safe to have it there.

Thanks. It is only thing from outside EU that would have a customs/import charge isn't it?

Yes correct, if sold by Amazon you will be ok, but check who the seller is, Amazon also have Marketsellers that are private sellers, a few might be based outside the EU.

If the item is shipped from outside the EU an import duty may be applied by customs if it's over a certain value, around €26 or so. If the item is for sale from amazon.co.uk through a reseller it would seem dodgy to me if they don't accept standard billing through credit card within the Amazon site.
