Advice on Picture Ratios please

I am preparing some photographs for printing. My software NX offers a limited number of crops but they cover all the size ratios I need.

My question is can I use say a 4 x 3 (1.33 ratio) crop and then send it off to the printers for a 16 x 12 (1.33 ratio) print. To put it simply can I crop to a ratio and ignore the size that gives it.

    Thanks

In many cases having the correct ratio will work out perfectly. However on occasions saving the photo to a small size can lead to a reduction in the total amount of pixels resulting in problems when trying to print larger sizes.
