Legal Drama Recommendation

    Hi all,

    I've recently got Netflix.

I like legal dramas and was wondering if there are any good ones out there.

I watched Suits on tv but lost interest after series 3 as it became a little silly.

Are there any dramas (like Silk on BBC) that are as much about the cases than about the glamour, romances etc?

    Thanks!!

Law & Order tended to focus more on the cases than the characters. And if you like it there are certainly plenty of episodes & spin-offs to keep you occupied :)

The Good Wife is excellent, if you haven't already seen it. It does focus more on the central characters, but they're very well written.

For UK dramas, maybe Judge John Deed, or Garrow's Law? And if it's not strictly courtroom drama you're interested in, Happy Valley is an excellent police drama. And the mini-series State of Play is definitely worth a look.

(Not sure whether all of these are on Netfix though)

"The Night Of" is top class.

Not on Netflix but available elsewhere.
Australian TV Drama Crownies and also Janet King. Both excellent legal dramas that feature interesting cases.
Crownies has a younger cast and it focuses on courtroom drama, work place relationships and the pressures of difficult cases on the professional and private lives of 1st year interns.
Janet King is a spinoff of Crownies and is definitely more serious. The first series is excellent, a mix of legal drama with an intense thriller storyline weaving it's way subtly through the series. It definitely keeps you guessing.

I think Damages is one of the best legal thrillers/dramas in the last 10 years. Each season in a self contained case, the seasons are short enough to ensure that there is no filler and there is an overall story running through the whole 5 seasons (a conflict between 2 characters) that has a really satisfying conclusion. Plus, Glenn Close in one of her best roles (and an excellent supporting cast).

Not on Netflix though, so you may need to find another source.

Boston Legal is awesome. The Practice is also excellent (and a bit more serious) and the final season acts as a sort of season zero for Boston Legal.

Night of (based on a UK show) is the single best piece of realistic legal fiction I've ever seen.

Making a Murder is excellent also.

For something a bit different watch "Rake" From OZ so less of the political correctness in American legal TV.

I'm not sure how politically correct a sex doll of Candice Bergen is or shooting a homeless man with a paintball gun. :pac:

Rumpole of the Bailey is a bit dated now but well worth the watching if only for the brilliant Leo mckern...who also turned up as Ryan's Daughter's father, if you get my drift...😊

It's probably closer to reality than most barristers in the Bailey would care to admit...

The other one that comes to mind is Judge John Deed....written from the point of view of view..and it has Martin Shaw whom I understand is popular with ladies over a certain age...ie puberty...😎

    Thanks a million folks!

Plenty of fine suggestions there. I might start with the politically incorrect ones. I like more gritty and less fancy if you follow me.

Agree re Rumpole - it was a superb series especially for it's time.

Making a Murder was superb also. Second series on it's way apparently.

    Many thanks.
