Keeping my handicap active

    Hi guys,
I'm thinking of taking a leave of absence for 2 or 3 years from my club. Is there any way to keep my handicap active? Can I play in club open days and submit my card to the GUI or something?

    thanks

No, you must be a member of a GUI affiliated club to have a valid GUI Handicap.

Distance membership is your only option.
But u have to play 3 comps a year in that club.

If u are in Dublin, bellewstown have a pay and play for 200 so not far to travel for your 3 comps.
No matter what you do it's going to cost u 300 odd quid to keep a handicap.

Thanks a mil. I'm pretty close to Bellewstown. The pay as you play is gone up to €249 - but it still sounds like an option. Never played there, whats the course like?

It's built on the side of a hill so the front 9 has quite severe gradients. It can be quiet wet in the winter aswell but seems to rarely close. I always found it a bit of a slog and can't say I enjoyed it but I've never played well there so that will definitely leave me with a bias. Overall nothing spectacular.

2-3 years at €249/year for Distance membership so around €750 just to keep your handicap, I'd forgo the €750 and play casual golf, when you join a course again they will reflect your last handicap and likely give you it back again unless you score better with your new 3 cards for handicap when you cross that bridge.
Clubs will not turn away your green fees when you are out of membership

To be honest, I do still want to play throughout the year but paying green fees for casual golf where I'll most likely be on my own and without the interest of a scoring competition, it doesn't interest me quite so much. I love being in competitions at the weekend with a bunch of lads - but with the chaos that having 4 young kids brings, I probably average about 2 games a month (sometimes I can go 3\4 weeks without a game). I can't justify my current sub of €1300 on that. So the Bellewstown option does sound good.

Trees have really grown so closed in a bit few weak holes across the hill but some crackers.
Was a member there for 5 years they are a good bunch of members.
Bit wet but always open but dries out quickly

    No it's not.

Just a couple of options all up to around the €300 mark, depending on location of OP of course

    http://www.corballisgolflinks.com/membership-info/7day-membership/

Also credit membership @ Castleknock is €700, but you can use that credit to play a few games & even pay for your mates, or buy stuff in the shop (new clubs or balls shoes etc), restaurant/bar and even have a party :) so actual membership only costs the GUI fee. It's great if you are local and would use the facilities a bit.
