    Hi
Wondering if anyone can clarify the following?
Mom in receipt of widows pension with 13 years, due to qualify for State OAP in June. Does she have to pay tax on one? If so, does she select which?

    Any advice appreciated

If your mother has been in receipt of a full widows Contributory pension for 13 years and she's going to be 66 in June then her entitlement will increase from €193.50 to €238.30. If she's living alone she can get the €9 living alone increase. She can ask to be means tested for the fuel supplement. She may also be eligible for the electricity allowance and free tv license.
    The pension part is taxable.
She doesn't have to apply for the pension the increase will happen automatically.
If she was getting a reduced widows pension and because of her own PRSI contributions she thinks she might get a higher rate of Con pension, then she should apply for a Con pension.
I hope you and she understand that she will not be in receipt of both a widows and an OAP.

    Hi Infogiver
Thanks so much for the info. We are a little baffled by all the details. So if I am right you are saying that she won't need to actually apply for the state pension, it will be added on to her Widow's pension? My sister lives with her and is on job seekers, ergo does this make her a dependant and would this affect her pension.
Regarding mom's PRSI contributions, she did work for many years but retired about 15 years ago.

Also am I right in assuming her Widow's pension will rise to €238.50 in June? She will be 67 in June.

Thanks so much for your advice on this, I really appreciate it.

    Hi OP
Is your mother going to be 66 or 67 in June?
If its 67 then her Widows Pension would have increased to €233.50 last June with no further increase this year apart from the €5 increase in March as per the Budget.
You understand your mother is not entitled to both a State Pension and a Widows Pension.
Your sister is living with your mother so your mother is not entitled to the Living Alone Increase. She is also not entitled to the electricity allowance or the free TV licence.
Your sister is not your mothers dependent. Your sisters SW payment will not be affected by your mothers pension and your mothers pension will not be affected by your sisters SW.
Your mother doesn't have to apply for anything unless your sister moves out when she can then apply for the things shes not entitled to now.
