I am wondering if anyone had an extremely Positive or extremely Negative performance appraisal in working environment.
are these appraisals a "Tick the box exercise" ? or do you as an employee see a benefit in an annual performance appraisal.
i feel a lot of people see these are more negative than positive - and despite all the training managers get they sometimes don't
complete an appraisal correctly and an employee feels negative impact...any thoughts.  i am hoping some people feel they are a good tool to facilitate growth but maybe not??

I'm not sure that the Psychology Forum is the most suitable for your question. Let me know if you want it moved to Work & Jobs. JC

Performance appraisal should be a positive experience, that's is collaborative and developmental.

There should be no issues brought up that have not already been discussed in supervision/line management.

In fact, it would be best practice to have key stakeholders involved in its design and what is to be evaluated during the process

Generally the appraisal template should be geared towards the strategic aims of the organisation, and any areas where the individual is lacking in skills etc, should be dealt with by a learning and development plan!!

Generally those conducting apprasils don't know the basics and use the process as a stick beating exercise

In my most recent job, I had a new inexperienced manager who's idea of a performance appraisal was to talk about an issue from four months previously where I couldn't remember the details of.

An hour of an appraisal resulted in the first 10 minutes on me going through my successful application of my SMART goals from the objective setting at the start of the year and 50 minutes on that relatively minor issue.

I'd have a tendency to now think of them of management's way to explain why one does not deserve to be paid at market rates. These evaluations seem to play on most peoples, myself included, wish to become validated that the work is being done correctly and not to disappoint the team. Hence when minor issues are brought to to fore, as jimmycrackcorm mentioned, then this acts as a means to lessen the perceived skills and hence market value of the participant.
