Wired Broadband House - 2 Modems

Have Virgin Broadband connection and the Virgin Hub 3.0 is upstairs and wifi around the house is ok. However I have a wired connection to PC in attic and now I want to run a wire from the Virgin Hub downstairs so that I can connect it to TV & Android Box to get better download speeds. Speaking to Sparks and he can do this no problem with the necessary wire. However I also have a UPC old Modem, Thompson TWG870. Currently I have a TP Link wireless plug but may use this for other TV.

Sparks said I could either run the wire down and then get a switch so I can run one wire into TV and other to Android box or use the Thompson Modem and insert the wire into this and then into the TV and android boxes

So what is the best option to get the best download speeds and if I do use the Thompson what configurations if any will I need to change?

Personally I would get the sparks to run two CAT6 cables from the Hub3 router to the TV location, and put a double ethernet socket on the wall near the TV location - you are only paying a few quid for the additional cable, the labour will be the same.

If you can only run one cable, then you can use either a small 5 port gigabit switch like this to connect both the TV and android box or use the old Thompson modem as a switch, just connect all three cables to the LAN ports, it should work with no configuration required. Either solution should work.

OP will possibly need to turn off DHCP if it was previously on in the Thompson, otherwise ... address conflict shenanigans! :D
