80s Bungalow Attic Insulation

    Hi folks,
I see there is a lot of info on here about insulation, different types thickness etc but I think I have a new one.... I'm coming home for a month in summer (from NZ) and I'm hoping to do some upgrading to my ma's bungalow. It was built in the mid 80s and insulated to what was then a reasonably good standard. But its since broken up, spread out and been eaten by mice...
The attic is fairly large and used for a lot of storage. Joists are the usual 100mm high at 400 centers. I've worked out I'll need around 200m2 of insulation. If I've to do 2 layers... 400m2.....
So from what I've read I should be putting 100mm between the joists and then 200mm over the top of that first layer?
The issue is, what do I do for storage if all my joists etc are covered in insulation? Currently there are boards of chipboard on the joists to carry most of the stuff. Do I need to raise the joists up to put board on them or can i just dump boards on the new insulation? I would imagine this isn't a great idea as it will squish all the air out of the insulation. I'm thinking of sticking in 1 layer (100mm) at the moment because of this, I don't really want the hassle and expense of having to put in another lot of roof joists... plus the loss of headroom for another 200mm would make it quite difficult to move around in. Maybe there is better insulation out there that will give me similar performance at 100mm to standard stuff at 300mm?
I've also read good things about foil stuff stapled to the roof side of the attic This kind of thing http://www.woodies.ie/diy/building-materials-and-supplies/insulation/thermawrap-1500mm-x-10m-x-25mm-top-up-quilt-1064015
Any thoughts or advice would be great! Its in Wexford if anyone has some good contacts to get stuff cheap.

You can put in a second set of joists at 90defrees to first ones. Flooring on top of these.
No need to do this over full space, maybe just where you need to store stuff.

Ahh simple! That might work. Any idea what to expect to pay for insulation? I vaguely remember seeing it for about 12 euro per roll the last time I was home. Are grants available for diy? Or only with approved installers

I don't know your circumstances but if your mum lives alone maybe she'd qualify for some of the community insulation programs where it's would be done free.
    www.camcas.ie being an example.

You can buy loft storage stilts to sit your flooring over the top of the insulation.
Or just use some blocks of scrap wood to make your own stilts like I did...

Ah these things all look great! Thanks guys! I'll crack into researching. Like the idea of stilts! Easy to knock something like that together, probably from all the sh1t thats in the attic!
Brian thanks for that tip. She is a pensioner living alone, I'll look into the elderly support groups, I'm sure there is something in Wexford.
I see on the SEI website they have a grant of up to 300euro for attic insulation, does anyone know if that only applies if I get a pro to install it?

all grants have to have registered contractors

300 Euro and registered people only? Wouldn't get much for that. Wouldn't buy much insulation never mind pay anyone to fit it.

Maybe look at the Better Energy Warmer Homes scheme, if your Mum gets the Fuel Allowance: http://www.seai.ie/Grants/Warmer_Homes_Scheme/About_the_BEWH.html
