Got a blurred photo of 'my' rear reg plate from Thurles, my last 2 numbers are '11' but in the photo it could also be '0'. It's a picture of the rear of a car on a dark morning , only 2 lights and the blurred reg plate are visible as if the car was going away from the camera. Appeal or pay

    Was it you?

    I say appeal.

When it gets to court and they confirm the combination of make, model, colour and license plate of car, then you get double the points plus a larger fine. :D

Of course, if it wasn't you ......

If a judge could be satisfied beyond doubt that the registration number is adequately clearly identifiable as yours you will be convicted.

Although the photo may be blurred it will be acceptable evidence if it can show clearly enough what it purports to prove.

If there is reasonable doubt about the image you should receive the benefit of doubt and an acquittal.

You should probably know if it was you by reference to the time and place of the photo.

If you are certain that it was not you and the photographic evidence looks ambivalent write to the Gardaí to argue your case and ask for the notice to be withdrawn. Watch the time limit.

You can request the full photo and see if it's any clearer, they don't send this out with the original fine as it lead to serious issues in relationships if there was an unexpected passenger. Requesting the original doesn't stop the clock.

they have a far higher resolution photo to zoom in on, also they may have checked the car makes and models of any numbers in doubt and established your reg is the only possible match
