With respect, most people don't consider price or shop around for something like this. Deciding to euthanase a beloved pet is a wrenchingly hard decision and money is the last thing on peoples minds.
Oh ya, it's a job for a vet as well.

I suppose some people do have to consider the cost though if they've no money in bank.

It cost me 250, that was with getting the individual ashes. Not sure how much it is without that.

Not that i want to think about it with my girl, but is it not covered on their insurance? (providing you have insurance!) The euthanasia that is, not the cremation!
I should really read the insurance details....but like i said, i don't want to be thinking about having to do it just yet!!

I think it depends on what age the dog is when you start the insurance. I know my fella wasn't covered because I got him when he was 10.

About €80 for a large dog if you don't get the ashes back. Don't know what it costs to get ashes back, but was a few hundred 3 years ago.
If you dispose of dog yourself it's around €40 - again for a large breed.

When I had my Bella put to sleep it was €60 in the vet hospital. She was a Cocker Spaniel. We didn't get her ashes back, much as I would have loved to, because we just couldn't afford it, it was a couple of hundred for individual cremation and return of ashes as far as I remember.

The euthenasia wasn't covered on the insurance. The treatments she received leading up to it were (blood tests, medications etc before we knew she was going to die) but the actual euthenasia wasn't covered.

I agree, it’s the last thing I wanted to think of but unfortunately had to be done. I did not have the money to keep his ashes and that was very hard as I would love to have been able to keep them.
Truly it broke my heart having to do this and he was totally loved and had a great life. It’s us behind that still miss him terribly and still feel the void in our home 1 year last Aug 5th ago😞

I have done both buried my dog at home after euthanisia and had one of my dogs cremated. 50 / 80 for the injection depending on the weight of the dog and 175 for a terrier to be cremated individually, cheaper if you dont want the ashes.

A friend of mine had a small dog euthanised last week and asked for individual cremation and the return of the ashes. He was too distressed to ask how much this would cost, but told me today that the total bill from the vet came to €650.

I was quite shocked to hear this. It really smacks of taking advantage of someone at a time when money is the last thing on the dog owner’s mind.

Thanks. I guess you could argue that it was my friend's fault for not asking how much it would cost, but I really think they should have made it clear how expensive it would be. He’s an OAP on a fixed income and this was way more than he can really afford.

Springwell, as a matter of interest, is the price increase very recent? And what sort of scale is the increase?

I've only my last experience of the process to go by, 1½ years ago. I think it was €300ish for my 45kg dog. Just wondering if things have changed hugely since then... nothing seems to have escaped a price increase these days!

The crematorium I use put prices up across the board on Jan 1st by 30%.

Jeez..... those figures seem extortionate. I've had 2 great ( sheepdogs )friends pass over in the last 25yrs.....both of them legends are buried at the top of the 'big field'.... both of em were lucky to see out long & good lives.....both got a good send off.....just the way things were always done in my family. Cremation would've never entered my head../ at those prices it never will either.

I think I paid around €120 for my cocker spaniel in November 2020 - I can't remember how much the actual individual cremation was on top, and I did get her ashes back.

You might want to consider the option of getting the vet to do a house call. It made a huge difference to me with our cat, less stress for the animal, privacy for the humans. Higher cost obvs.

I paid €270 this year for a medium sized dog but I brought her to the crematorium myself.

In addition to that I had a vet fee of €100 for the actual euthanasia but this included a home visit, it would have been maybe half that to bring her but it was something we went out of our way to avoid as she hated going in. So €370 total. Even with utility increases in the past couple of months €650 does seem extortionate.

I wonder if they maybe got a wooden box for the ashes as that would bring the price up depending on what they got the ashes back in?

Coco came back home in a wooden box included in the €270 I paid. In addition I did get some keepsakes, necklaces and keychains which were €30 each. (as an aside I saw a beautiful tribute on insta of a jeweller that set a pair of dogs canines into a necklace, and I'm thinking I might get some of Cocos baby teeth that I had kept made into earrings. They're too small for a necklace)

This is the keepsake I would have loved to get. Never even thought of it until I saw this pic.

Will be paying a very large vet bill myself shortly, some covered by insurance. Two veterinary hospital fees as my late cat BooBoo was transferred to a specialist place to investigate could anything be done to prolong quality life. I know the euthanasia itself won’t be covered, because insurance covers risk, and the risk of death during an animal’s life time is 100%.

Have a cat and two hens buried at the bottom of the garden. Not sure what future archeological digs might think.

He was a great cat and the hens were the neighbors ex battery rescue hens.

Animals are great gifts.

It's in a patch of birch trees. It's actually a beautiful place to be buried.

For Lucy I just couldn’t bring myself to cut some of her fur.. I ended up plucking enough off her fleece coat after she died to get made into a bead and I got one made from Baileys fur at the same time to have them both on a bracelet! They took her paw prints at the vet and send them in card shortly after she died. I think we paid around €250-300 for hers and got a wooden box with her name on it and place for a photo - I have one of the paw prints in it and her photo on top

I have the paw prints and I took a little bit of Cocos fur, not to do anything in particular with though. The hardest thing is talking about her in the past tense, I still talk like she's still here sometimes.

It cost us 75 in vets and then I drove our little one to Pawprints in Trim. I think it cost another 235 for Pawprints, that included her Pawprint in a frame and her ashes returned in a lovely wooden box. I dropped her in on a Saturday and Glen from Pawprints dropped her back on Monday. Would fully recommend them. Sounds weird, but having her ashes back mitigated the loss, its like she is back home.
