Wedding Wine!

    Hi all,

Just a query about alcohol at the reception...

I've narrowed it down to two hotels.

One offers half a bottle of wine per person with the meal and a drinks reception of whiskey, baileys and sherry. The other does a glass and a top up of wine and sparkling wine reception but has free corkage for baileys and whisky. All other details are very similar so I'm not sure which is the best deal?? Someone had said that half a bottle per person for the meal isn't enough but I'm not a big wine drinker so I've no idea about that...

    Thanks

Half a bottle per person for the meal is plenty. In fact, it seems to be the standard recommendation from most hotels when working out how much wine you'll need.

We had allowed half bottle of wine per person and it was more than enough. We had about 10 bottles left over afterwards. 180 at the wedding

Not sure if this will post twice as I got an error message...

Thanks for the replies. Of the two, the first hotel is probably the better deal then, they are the same price per head.

Also, for a drinks reception, is it better to have prosecco or something sparkling or should I go for the whiskey and sherry etc.

    Thanks again

My concern about whiskey or spirits would be that people would be plastered before the dinner. Sherry's not to strong AFAIK, but not sure how popular it would be - I don't know any young people who drink it. Would the one that does the half bottle per head allow you to substitute sparkly wine for the whiskey? Are you doing any food on arrival?

I don't know anyone who drinks sherry and I doubt a lot of people will start their day on whiskey.

Completely agree, unless you know that this is something that your guests actually like I think a much lighter drink would be more advisable.

I've never heard of anyone specifically serving sherry or whiskey at a wedding. Fruit punch / mulled wine / pimms / prosecco etc are all the norm or beer?

Yeah that was just what they have as their standard option. I'll see what they said about a bit of fizz instead, I'd prefer that at least. We're having some food with the drinks, haven't decided what yet exactly, they gave us a few options. We're having the ceremony in the hotel so no travel involved so I don't want half the guests completely plastered by dinner! :)
