Spreading 0-7-30

Usually try to spread 2 bags of 0-7-30 on silage ground before putting out the CAN for silage. Last few years with weather being bad it might be near April before I spread it and the CAN a week.or two later. I think this is far too late and might result in too much uptake in the grass rather than in the soil. Is this concentration too low to cause issues or should I get it out earlier? If earlier, is it say to graze a few weeks after?

When do you cut your silage and what do you graze the ground with?
    Have you breeding stock?

Would usually spread the nitrogen mid march and cut early June, only do one cut. Like to graze off the meadows in march as it gives a cleaner crop. Wouldn't be heavy grass on it. Would graze with both calvdled cows and cattle.

Ah I'd say it would be ok.
The best thing anyone can do is either graze or top your grass before closing for siage.
Teagasc recommend from 140 units of K in index 1 land to near zero in index 4.
Then don't forget the N rule of using up 2 units of N per day (in ideal conditions) from spreading to cutting.
I don't think you're milking cows but if you were to just watch them grazing after spreading the 60 units of K especially in cold wet weather.

It's really better for anyone that wants to spread big amounts of K for grazing ground to skip it in the spring to avoid tetany and small amounts during the year or a bigger amount in August/ September.
    (Although depends when calving too).

Going to put 0-7-30 on silage ground with a few bags of silage cut for another cut of silage. Would ye mix the 2 lots of fertilizer together or would I be better going in two separate runs?

For sake of accuracy I'd go separate. Wouldn't be putting a massive amount of N out as it may go in to September cutting

either way will make no difference to effectiveness of each.

Good to know it makes no difference either way... I suppose it would be a more even cover done separate.
How many units of N should I go for? Say get it out before the end of the week? Aiming to cut around the second week of September?

Would 18 6 12 not do and you would only need to go out once? If it got 3 bags to the acre?

You have to mix it very well to get a fairly even spread. I be inclined to go with two spreads unless where it going is a distance away. Second week in September is ending about the 11/12. That gives you 40days growth. I definitely give it 50units of N, you could gamble on up to 60 but IMO that would be the real maximum amount. As grass may be hard to wilt you may not have that option with weather. Depending on weather it may run to late September before cutting. As well you have to factor in how recent these fields got N if they are after being cut for 2nd cut that not an issue if used for grazing and they got a nice but 2-3 weeks ago you may have to factor that in

Yeah it’s after a second cut but won’t put slurry out this round. Have a few bags of 0-7-30 lying around so thought it could only do the ground some good.
Yeah I suppose it would want a good 50 units to make it worth my while.
Hopefully will get it out now after all this rain!

Yeah we swear by the 18-6-12 can’t ever remember us spreading CAN or Urea. Our soil needs the P and K though too.

Ideally you would want two bags of 0-7-30/acre. Unless second cut was 7days ago you will have little growth(takes grass to grow grass) for 10 days as sward recovers. However all N is probably gone out of the sward. I with 1.25 bags of urea/ acre and aim for 20th ISH of September

So you are heading for a third cut?
Your K would be fairly well drained after 2 cuts.

Would say do 2/3 cwt 0:7:30 per acre and 70 units N.
    I got a very good second cut from 1 S of A plus 1 urea /acre; that's 67 N and 21 S
or you could do 1Urea + 1 Sul Can per acre.

Rough mix with shovel in spinner - small bags.
