Bit of an odd issue my year old Bichon has started to pee inside something he has rarely done even as a puppy...the only thing I have noticed is that he has learned to cock his leg over the last few week...and now anything is fair game curtains, chairs and even people who call to the house he has attempted to cock his leg which was followed with a hasty retreat to the garden...
We have young kids in house with toys and stuff hanging around so don't need him thinking he can pee anywhere he likes....any advice or have others ever noticed this...
    Thanks

This is very unhygienic with children.

More information may help a little.. what age is he now? Is he neutered etc?

Year old and not neutered...well behaved otherwise. We watch him now and have increased trips outside. While we normally can tell or catch him before he tries or goes.

Neutered dogs are much less likely to develop this behaviour. I normally do not care whether someone else's dog can reproduce or not, none of my business- but it might help to neuter him?

Try putting peeing on command, rewarding him for it. Increasing trips outside isn't going to do a lot if the dog doesn't have a concept that it should only pee in x place, which is not something that comes naturally to all dogs. But putting it on a command and giving rewards for it might serve as a way to teach that idea.

Has he been checked by the vet? Could be a kidney infection. There are lots of diseases that can cause a problem like this, so it's worth getting a checkup, just in case.

Do you give him a treat when he pees outside?

No don't give a treat for peeing outside anymore we did when we were training him and was toilet trained quickly, like he will go to his usual spot and go but it looks like he not going fully and then try's to go inside...
We are planning on getting him neutered anyway so might do that sooner and it might be a good idea to see vet for check up.
Would it be a good idea then to treat him when he pees outside still ?

    Not exactly constructive advice?

OP, if he's only just started to cock his leg and he's doing it inside, it could be hormonally charged. Has anybody brought another dog to visit the house? Or are there any neighbouring dogs that may have gone into heat? It may also indicate a medical problem, perhaps a UTI if he's doing it constantly or perhaps stress related. Most male dogs will cock their leg when they reach maturity, small dogs do mature quicker, and while some dogs do regress with toilet training during adolescence it can be dealt with by retraining.

Plenty of people keep their dogs intact, but find they don't mark their own home. If they do it's a problem. Problem marking can sometimes be dealt with by neutering - it should take away the desire to mark - which is what he's doing, he's not relieving himself of a full bladder, particularly if he's marking on humans - which is completely unacceptable - whatever about household fixtures and fittings which may not be completely clean of pee odour, it's absolutely a big problem to cock on humans. Bear in mind, the effects of neutering are not immediate, it can take a number of weeks for the hormones to leave his system, so be extremely vigilant when he does get the snip, otherwise it may become habitual and you'll have to go back to basics or

Thanks so much for your advice...I will pay a visit to vets tomorrow to rule out a medical problem first off ..I will discuss getting him neutered as well.
While he attempted cocking his legs with guests (twice) he never got the chance to pee as he stopped once I instructed him to go outside.
There are dogs next door and I think one is bitch.....while he knows now it's wrong to do what he is doing it looks like he is doing instinctively..
    Thanks again for your advice.

Scent marking isn't like a toilet training accident, a dog doesn't know it's wrong, it's an overwhelming desire to mark their territory so partly instinctive given he's full of testosterone! I do find some dogs can be literally bursting with testosterone and horny as hell even with neutered dogs, yet with others you wouldn't even know they were intact unless you looked!

Others can be grand at home but terrible when out visiting, my friend cant bring her dog to any of her friends or families homes, he's a disaster for cocking the leg. And a demon in the vets when he gets the scent of other dogs.

I have an 8 year old male bichon who will still try to do a sneaky cocking of the leg in the house on occasion, particularly if there is something left on the floor that isn't normally there like a bag or a football. He is also neutered. Once he cocked his leg on a person when I was standing there talking to them:eek: When I catch him doing this I let out a very sharp and loud AH AH so he knows it's completely wrong. Just catch this in the bud before it gets worse and neutering is probably a good idea too. My little guy might have been worse if he wasn't neutered.
