I heard today that Glen of the Downs has closed its doors. Can anyone confirm. It would be a shame if true, as I had some very enjoyable games there.

Closed 2weeks ago. Despite members best intentions and efforts it looks unlikely to reopen. Sad times.

Its not dead in the water just yet, the course is still being maintained and the sale appears to be going ahead as a job lot according to the Irish Times ... http://www.irishtimes.com/business/transport-and-tourism/goldman-sachs-and-aib-team-up-for-glen-of-downs-golf-club-sale-1.2954220

The farmer allegedly remains intersted in buying it back and reopening it as soon as possible. The members are split over this with some wanting nothing to do with the farmer and preferring to try and buy it thenselves ... while others just want to get back to playing golf there regardless of who owns what. The danger is that the longer it drags on, the more people will move elsewhere and the less a viable option it becomes.

Any reopening of the club will have to be cost attractive for potential members as I doubt if there is enough golfers out there willing to invest anything over €1600 per annum on golf subs and certainly very few willing to risk paying 'buy in' money these days.

I hope I'm very wrong, but after the meeting on Thursday I met with a number of Members and confidence is not high that it will reopen. I genuinely hope it does.

Sad indeed. Have enjoyed a few rounds there and it always seemed quite lively and used. Surprised it's gone. Sign of the times, I suppose. It looks like only clubs with very low debt levels can survive as they can't bring in sufficient cash to cover significant debt servicing. Just an observation. I hope it gets up and running again, maybe with some debt reduction.

We had a deposit paid there for a boards society round this year as well. :(
