I have a grant 50/90 outdoor boiler with a RDB1 burner that will not fire goes to lock out , press red reset button, can hear what sounds like a fan going then 10 seconds later a click then what sounds like a buzzing noise then cuts out, pulled burner out ,everything fairly black and sooty , gave everthing a wipe could see what i think was top of photocell looking down in to burner could just reach this it was black so gave this a wipe, put burner back in still wont fire.
Thought maybe not getting oil , so put allen key into bleeder with burner on before cutting out expecting to see oil spit out but nothing seem to come out just a very small bit around edges?

When was it last serviced ?
has to be over 2 years ago.
    well there you go then,
    yeah i know.

If the boiler was serviced properly 2 years ago then it shouldn't be burning incorrectly and leaving soot deposits at any stage. Did you run out of oil recently?

id say getting on for 3yrs now, no recent oil fill, plenty of oil in tank, problem started last week, it would fire up and go to lock out after 30 mins, would not restart with pressing reset button , now wont fire up at all.

if no oil coming through then you possibly have a blockage at the filter

also fuel pump could be shot

Could be, is it only 1 filter on it ? have a filter by the handle on tank to cut off oil.

there is also a filter on the fuel pump itself

try the filter at the tank first the condition there will give u a fair idea of whats going on

No still not firing, back in now after taking burner out again , took out spray nozle with spanner, see what it looks like , kind of dark looking ,so just wipe it gently, came back to a gold colour, put back in,still wont fire but now wont go to lock out just continues with fan and click , wont lock out,so just turned it off.
just trying to get some heat in house until monday, then call out the professionals.

Never ever wipe or even touch the face of the nozzle.
Get someone in on Monday on a service call. They might go easy on you if they're servicing and repairing at the same time

the nozzle that should be fitted to your boiler is

a danfoss .60x60s set to 9 bar pressure and then set up using a flugas analyser which will guarantee max efficiency and safety from your boiler

I am assuming your boiler is a standard eff boiler non condensing

its a regular for us to find the incorrect nozzle fitted on burners 9 times out of ten they work
in your case the above nozzle is what should be fitted it is the recommended nozzle by the manf of your boiler

we always try and fit the nozzle as per manf spec at least then we have a starting point to set up your boiler properly

have you ever been handed a printout from a flugas analyser by the person who looks after your boiler im guessing no

Just a update, i was sure it wasn't the pump because still had some pressure on bleeding, turns out it was.

Put the burner back on today after repair , burner now working fine, but still concerned of water in tank because of pump fail, so didn't connect oil to burner , i let oil oil drain into a bowl to see what it is like, but notice mixture of oil/water, was going to let it drain into 20L tank i had , but this was taking too long so got a pump with a tube put tube directly into bottom of tank and pumped away, all that was coming out was water, expected it to clear to oil soon enough , No, i drained about 50L of water before oil came out, could this right ?,tanks 13yrs old, no sight of leak, seem alot of water to me.
so after oil was coming out clear connected oil back to burner, it started but then started to splutter stop and restart, so stopped it and disconnected oil and put 20L can of clean kerosene to burner and is running fine now, i properly have mixed up water/sludge in tank now, will letting tank settle over night solve this.

You drained the tank of water. Did you let the clean kerosene run through the pipe at the point it meets the burner though?

I open the valve on the tank without connecting to oil burner to drain pipe from tank to burner in to a dish still noticed water at first until i thought it had cleared then connected it to burner, then spluttering started so disconnected.
