Just wondering if anyone has experienced the death of a bullock due to bloating and rape seed oil? Bull dead this morning out in a field of rape seed oil. Wasn't visibly sick and died overnight as they were checked yesterday evening. Extremely bloated.

Was it in flower? The plant can be toxic after it flowers. Bit early though.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

I presume you mean Forage Rape and not Oil Seed Rape?

Are you feeding hay or silage as a forage source with it?
Are you supplementing with Phosphorus and Iodine?

We lost a weanling with bloat after it broke into my FIL's field of turnips and cabbage. The Vet told me that the bloat was a different type from the normal grass/clover bloat which is gassy bloat. This bloat was bubbly bloat where the gas stays in small bubbles cause the contents of the rumen (brassicas) is thick and prevents the bubbles from joining up together ifykwim. He knew we were in trouble when he used a trocar & cannulla and no gas was released. We shoot the weanling later that night as the pain killing meds the Vet had given were obviously not working and the animal was in severe pain.
Edit - rape is a member of the brassica family.

What way were you feeding it, strip grazing I assume? If they were on it with a while I'd be surprised as you'd think he would have adapted to it. Have heifers on it here they broke threw it one day after I moved the wire and they were fine. They are getting a bale a day as well but this silage would be hairy so to speak. Bloat is possible but generally only if they gorge on it
