Outside Smells Coming Through Heating Vents

    Hi there

We have a bit of a problem with external odours coming into the house through our vents.

A few years ago, we found that we were getting the smell of our neighbours cigarette smoke in our house - usually on our landing and in our utility room. Those neighbours have moved out and a new family is now living there. Unfortunately (for us) they cook really really strongly smelling food at all hours of the day (even 7.30am) and we often wake to the overwhelming smell of food all over the house. However, we seem to have narrowed the root of the smell down to the same two areas - our hot press and the utility room. It seems to be strongest here and then fills the entire house. This can last for hours at a time and it really is difficult to be around.

When our neighbours cook, they do so with their kitchen window open. This opens on to our garden and is only a few feet from the main vents on our utility room.

I know it is possible to have a carbon filter fitted in the cooker hood / extractor fan to neutralise odours. Is it possible to fit something similar on our other vents to prevent the smells coming into the house?

I would rather not speak to our neighbours about this. As much as I'm really frustrated with the situation, they are absolutely entitled to cook their own food in their own house with their windows open if they so choose. If there is a way for me to manage this on our property that would be preferable.

Has anyone come across this before?
Any advice / suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
