So for arguments sake, you do Rally Driving. And you happen to play DIRT on your Play Station. For example, is the track route accurately replicated?

Note Jacques Villeneuve practiced F1 driving on an F1 Simulator as well.

No. It's only a video game, and it occupies my kid as well.

Dirt probably isn't a good example because the tracks probably aren't all that accurate. Although in rally your not really learning a track like in track racing, so it's probably not as much of an issue.

When it comes to racing on a track it's much more comparable, because the top simulating software uses laser scanned version of the track that should give a very accurate reproduction of the real world counterpart.

While it's a helpful way of practicing the theory of driving fast and getting really familiar with a track layout it's probably not going to directly translate, I could spend a year practicing the ferrari 458 on a laser scanned nordschleife but it's unlikely I'd be able to go out and do the same thing in the real world simply because I don't want to die.

When it comes to the pros they use specialised versions of the software any sim racer would use like rfactor, assetto corsa and iracing, so they can scrutinize everything they do and actually simulate their actual car and it's set ups.

It's a help but it's basically theory until you apply it in a real car. Just like a book might tell you how to drive fast doesn't mean you'll hop into a race car and be fast straight away.
