I would have thought this pretty much ended the argument:
In response, SuperValu said that they fund the cost of this promotion themselves

In defense of the farmers, they have to whinge and appear to be poor otherwise they wont get the old grants.

Reminds of that Brussels sprout business a few years back.

People complain about farmers, yet most who complain would be complaining if they had to work 7 days a week.
The people who complain also seem to like to eat food...

Ok but not sure of the relevance here. WHY did the farmers complain? They were not being asked to supply free carrots?

Cannot afford a round roast anyways! Or I would avail me of the offer...

It causes price wars and in the end it is the supplier who pays.

If the Irish farmers don't like this (and they are getting paid) just use foreign spuds and carrots......

All the money only goes to the one supplier who is part of the promotion then. All the other suppliers will see a drop in sales. The article is very badly worded and doesn't explain it well.

For a few days offer? Rather an overreaction? If it were permanent?

My understanding/assumption is that all suppliers of potatoes and carrots will continue to receive money as normal because SuperValu will continue to buy potatoes and carrots as normal, but in the case of this promotion, Supervalu will absorb the cost of giving the vegetables out for free to any customers who buy a particular cut of meat.

EDIT: I understand the part about suppliers of other vegetables being unhappy about the special offer on vegetables they do not supply, but I don't see how it's any different from any 2 for 1 offer on shampoo or anything like that - special offers on one product will likely impact on competing products.

Carrots are so cheap anyway the Super Value can afford to give them away. A free carrots promotion costs a lot less money than say 25% off beef, pork or lamb.
The round roast itself is already on offer at half price.

Definitely a huge issue given that the promotion will no doubt forever and ever.

Missed that hence deleting the post however I wouldn't take too much notice of Super Values claims of half price, until I'd check them myself.

    Farmers whinging eh, there's a change.

Part of the issue is that free promotions tend to devalue the product. If its advertised enough as being free then the general perception is why pay for it or why pay the "normal" price.

I was in my (new)local Supervalu this week and they had ONE item that was genuinely half price, breakfast cereal.

The rest of the prices were higher than elsewhere. I bought only the cereal.

I think they think that if they make a big offer like this we will all flock in and buy our weekly supplies there. Loss leader they call it .. no way...

LIDL have carrots this week and baby potatoes at 49 cents a k!
