Have any of ye tried to tape and joint plasterboard yourself ?
If so, is it something you picked up easily after a bit of time or how did it go ?

I'm nearly ready to have my plasterboard done and need to watch every euro at this stage ( who doesn't ) and think I may do it myself.

    Thanks

It's not an easy job to do. I know your watching the euros but it really is a job for the pros. And by pros I mean lads that actually to taping and jointing not plasters. It's a very skilled thing to do and get dead right.

Its easy after the third one.

getting the plaster mix right, and learning how and when to finish is the hard part. But you can still sand down if needed.

As for taping, its nice to do it right, but screw and nail marks untaped will show up much earlier, and look much worse.

How and when to finish is crucial for sure.

I tried a bit of tape and jointing on two rooms. Doing the butt-joints (sheet edge to sheet edge) is handy enough. Corners are a bit tougher, and after doing one or two, I left the corners and put caulk in there instead.
The sanding is the worst part, no matter how well you try and seal up a room to stop dust getting out, it will get out.
If I was doing it again, I would get the wall skimmed, more because of the dust issue.

The whole house needs to be done so dust won't matter, it's a bit of a site at the moment !

Go for it, but start on walls or a room where you won't be looking at it every day. I did all my own plastering - you'd spot the first room or two I tackled easily enough but by the time I got to the sitting room, I was reasonably handy at it. That said, if you want as best a finish as possible - you can't beat hiring lads who do it all the time.

Start in a small room first so you're not taking too much on in one go and you get an idea of how much work is involved.

If you have to sand afterwards I'd say don't bother. A properly floated surface will have a slight beaded finish when dry. This gives less glare and light reflection when painted. If you sand you remove this beaded finish and the walls will not look nearly as well.
