Unbelievable that you have no medical card. I know a barrister and teacher and their two kids have medical cards.

I think you're jumping to conclusions. Op hadn't said he wasn't awarded one just that he doesn't have one. Can't imagine he wouldn't be given one with DA.

I had one at some point but it was a lot of hassle. Already been to the ombudsman and all. The reason why i got tge medical card was that my public health nurse fought for it. It expired a year later and they've been declining me since. I didn't even get a card, just a number of some sort

Why are they declining you? There must be a reason. Of course you don't have to say but maybe someone can help you.

The reason they give us was that my mom is "nurse" and my das is working. I guess its means tested or something

The drugs payment scheme means a maximum of €144 a month on medication if that would be of any use to you?

I did'nt mean to be nosey in asking that question. I would urge you to apply again for a Medical Card. You are applying in you own right, so you don't need to give details of who is in the household. If you are asked, write a note impressing that you live independently on your own income. Get your GP to write a strong letter of support. S/He will know what to say, as that kind of question will have been asked of them previously.

I'm disgusted that you have been refused a card. But thats what happens with centralised decision-making.

No, it's okay. I have also tried doing that before but no luck still.

The medical card is means tested and your parents Income will be taken into account but exceptions can and will be made for serius illness. I was over the limit for the medical card but was awarded one due to the seriousness of my condition. A letter from a hospital consultant can go a long way. Also if you at attend a hospital clinic for your illness see if they have a social worker attached to them. They can be very helpful and can review your application before you submit it and may be able to get supporting letters from various specialists. Finally try talking to your local TD and see can they help.
