    Remove wall.
Insert steel beam with suitable end bearing points (this could be a further steel post at each end carried down to foundation).

So assuming your builder will do that work, and has priced for that.

The engineer to come in, survey, design, inspect, certify....maybe €750ish inclusive of VAT?

OP: as above, but make sure the engineer is on board right from the start, this process, as described by kc cannot be done as an afterthought

The builder would be lucky to get that and he has the hard work to do.

So is the pile of bricks, timber etc that has just collapsed on the person that thought he could do it himself.

Might get t cheaper when someone looks at the actual job. Price is a rough. Are from what's described in your post.

Making the Ope and then reinstating floors, frames, plastering etc will cost a lot more than the engineers fee.

Steep?? I'm a structural engineer and wouldn't go near something like this for €750... if you get that price then take his hand off!

Bear in mind, i'm talking about the wall in isolation, nothing about certifying the works as a whole, depending on what the OP is carrying out.

The engineer I use for this work is 875 plus VAT when he knows the builder and its just the beam work, nothing else.
He is more if a new builder.

€750 including vat is what our engineer charges for this type of work . He's working with our company for 6 years now so knows the quality of work.He charges builders he doesn't know a min. of €1100 plus vat.
For these types of jobs there is very little comeback on the builder if something goes wrong once an engineer is involved so you're not only paying for a beam spec and cert , you're also paying for the engineer to make sure the builder does his job properly.
