Faulty thermostat?

Just wondering if our upstairs thermostat is faulty. There's no beat going to the upstairs rads, even though it's set to come on with the timer. downstairs UFH is working fine. Upstairs thermostat display light is off most of the time, not even coming on if I turn the temperature wheel up or down. It lights up occasionally but no heat from the rads.
Would this indicate a loose wire/faulty thermostat?
Downstairs stats work fine with display light always coming on if I turn wheel up or down
    Thanks

    Do a few simple checks:
    1. turn on the timer for upstairs, then turn the thermostat up to the max.  Zone valve should open and boiler should fire. Turn it down to minimum, zone valve should close and boiler should stop firing (though pump may run on).  You should hear the thermostat click when it passes the actual room temp (around 20 degrees or something close).
    2. turn off the timer for all zones.  Boiler should stop firing. Then manually open the zone valve for upstairs.  Boiler should fire again.
This should help eliminate if it is a timer, wiring, thermostat or zone valve problem.
