Hi...I have an old septic tank with two compartments and two manholes. Put in around 1975....One of the manholes is completely buried by soil and the other manhole is open with no lid and has two broken/cracked risers...the whole area is unsafe.

So my question is; I wish to tidy it up and replace the risers etc. I have a digger an coming tomorrow to help sort it out....Should I put risers and a lid on BOTH manholes for easy access for emptying and should there be pipes put in for air....

Thanks very much for any advice

Definitely put an manhole access point on each side of the tank. The half nearest to the house will be the side with the most sludge and that that is the side that will need to get cleaned out the most. The other side will have a certain amount but still requires access. The tank should have ventilation in the form of pipes protruding out of the ground, although some people dont do this because of smells!
