What type of lock. Yale may be the manufacturer, but is it a euro cylinder or night latch etc.

Very easy to open those, my eyes were opened when a neighbour was locked out but another neighbour was able to get through that type of lock in 5 seconds.

    Can you install a deadbolt?

A nightlatch is really only an after thought lock, essentially allowing you to close the door there and then if your hands are full for example. It is not meant to be the primary locking mechanism.

What type of door is it, old school wooden or modern pvc etc that you pull the handle up.

Isn't there a metal panel availble to help prevent thieves 'slipping' the lock with a card/coke can/plastic bottle?

Even with that, there are certain ways a door can be easily manipulated to pop out the latch. Remember a thief won't care about causing a little damage if he gains entry. A nightlatch shouldn't be the only defence against a break in.
