    Hello,

    I'm trying to make some books with a TY class and we really need some illustrations. We're going to give it a go ourselves. Our question is - what kind of program do you use to make a cartoon animal? Don't know if I can attach it here but the kind of thing that you get by Googling 'cartoon monkey'. How did the people who made those make them?

    But really, it's probably a drawing tablet hooked up to the likes of photoshop or I'd recommend the freeware version GIMP.

    (Yes, it's an unfortunate acronym. It stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program)

    You could use one of these with it:

    ...as, I think a mouse would be very finicky.

    If the books are to be printed, perhaps the similar (but different) free software to GIMP, that of INKSCAPE url]https://inkscape.org/[/url might be better, as it's vector based.

    That means the artwork (whether scanned/photographed from paper sketches, or input using a drawing tablet) can be more easily tweaked, scaled and modified. It may well also print with better quality.

    There would still be somewhat of a learning curve, as with any software.

    If its for books for youngsters, design quality isn't too important so would suit them as a project.
    Primary colours and simple bold lines and basic shapes are ideal for u12's.

    If the books are to be sold, avoid any copyright infringements, so don't grab art from google searches.

    You could also commission the art out fairly cheaply, then try selling as ebook/epubs on the App type stores
    - if there's a worthy story line, or educational (Pedagogy) benefit to be had for other students.

    Thanks for the suggestions! It's just an ebook TY students are going to make in IRish class. Will only be used for the younger years to read, definitely won't be selling them. I'll look into all the suggestions! Years ago I bought a wacom tablet but could never get it working. Might give it a go again.
