Holter Monitor

    Hey guys,

Just wondering about processes etc. I was referred for a 24-hr standard Holter monitor to a private hospital. So turns out health insurers don't fully insure this and see it as an out patient. It would be 160 and 50% back on outpatient. I spoke to my GP who said I wouldn't even be seen publically as I am too young (25). Is there no way to get this done as a private patient in a public hospital? Although the cost may be the same.

    Thanks!

You can get referred to a public hospital but you join the same list as everyone else. Plenty of GPS offer this service,it's the kind of thing where cross referral between GPs would work well and save a lot of money.

Yeah I asked just to be referred again to a public hospital. 160 for the monitor and 180 for a 10 minute chat with the consultant, no thanks. It's really more the insurance companies I blame for not covering, but alas!

Ring around the other GPs in the area, see if they provide the service. If they do, ask if they'll offer you the test and forward the results to your GP. Most places I know of providing the service charge around 70-80 euros for their own patients and cover offer the test within a few days.

Good idea, will do actually! That's a much more reasonable charge. Thanks!

Boots are doing this service now in Ireland for 50 euros, check their website.

Plenty of GP's offer 24 hour BP monitoring but very few offer holter monitoring. It's not so much the actual monitoring thats the problem its the interpretation which tbh is something a cardiologist is far more qualified to do.
Re Boots they offer the BP monitoring too but not Holter (ECG monitoring for 24 hours or more).
