VAT on goods imported from Australia?

    Hi All,
Does anyone know the situation regarding VAT on goods imported from Australia into Ireland?

I have a vat registered business & have previously purchased goods from an Australian company via their agent in the UK who invoiced me under his own UK vat registered business & as such he issued 0% vat rated invoices. Duty was paid by the supplier on import into Ireland.

Recently I think the UK agent for them has wound up his business & I am now dealing direct with them. They have now issued me with a tax invoice from Australia, but it is in pounds sterling & includes vat at 20% & payment has to be made into their UK Natwest bank account.

Is this correct & if so, how do I deal with accounting at my end? Can I claim it back?
