Hi, I am 24 years old, single, working full time in security and i am very active outside fixing cars and working on a farm, and i am very health conscious as i have acid reflux and problems with my stomach (cant keep food down when i get stressed)

I currently have health insurance with VHI at 780e annually, its good cover but a bit basic and unclear with it comes down to the private hospitals, but never made a claim with them,

It is now time for renewal :( and i am giving myself depression looking at other plans and benefits to try get the best plan available.

i have found a plan with LAYA healthcare for 950euro that have , as it seems, a very good level off cover for private hospitals in galway and surrounding areas.

is it a bit much to be paying for one person? i have pay another 250e to a separate company for dental insurance which is very good.

    any help is appreciated

Renewing health insurance is a nightmare. I renewed our family one recently. Myself and my teenage daughter had
very good Insurance, covered for some of the private hospitals. My husband was covered for private, in the public
hospitals only. I wanted to increase his level of cover. Declan Goode of...I think the web site is...totalhealthcover.ie
does a lot of interviews on health cover renewal. One thing he mentions, and that is what I did, is if you take out a policy with a higher excess cover, then you can actually save a lot of money. To try to clarify what I mean.....
In our old policy, if any of us were hospitalised, then we paid the first E125, and Laya covered everything else.
I changed it so we now pay the first E250 if hospitalised, and we ended up with my husband getting far better cover
than he had, to include some private hospitals, for cheaper cover.
Declan Goode.s company actually do the research for you, and I think he charges about E120 for the consultation.
Also look on the HIA website, where you can compare Insurance companies.
    Best of luck...

Another vote for using www.hia.ie to compare policies. There are a huge amount available, so what I found easiest was to compare your current policy to other ones offered by the same insurer in terms of benefits (as the description of benefits tended to be less consistent when comparing across insurers). I tried to eliminate or minimise benefits that I did not want/need (maternity, complementary and alternative therapies) and ended up with a cheaper policy that actually gave more of what I wanted. Once you pick out one that suits your needs, you can then compare that with policies across insurers in a similar price range.

Just a word of caution , your reflux will be seen as a pre-existing condition so the enhanced cover may be subject to a waiting time.I would check that first .

Health insurance is expensive until you need it. You don't mention the plan so it's hard to offer advice but I would suggest you look at the HIA website, it lets you compare plans side by side.
