Heading to spain in summer, will be driving around and use google maps on iphone a lot.

Possible to get a prepaid SIM for a month, insert to secondary mobile phone, (I have an old samsung perfect for it) and tether devices off it?

you can do that with google maps too. Search for a location in the app, when you find it type "ok maps" (without the double quotes) in to the search bar and hit search, it will give you a finite square you can download for offline use.

Here do it better , you download the whole country without any missing.

Google limit it to small areas.

Orange.es have good deals too - better than Vodafone, I believe. I got a Mundo sim last year that was good value - around €10 if I remember correctly.

I second the HERE maps and offline downloads. Very easy to burn through 1 or 2 Gbs of data in a month, especially with maps.

This site has information on all the local sims. I go to a local shopping centre near to where we stay that has several mobile phone shops and pick up the best bargain at the time.

Edited to add: Some providers won't allow you to tether, so best to confirm that if you're relying on that. Orange allowed it and it worked fine. Had a pre-paid 3uk sim with me that wouldn't.

This works if you have a Mifi. Unfortunately, if you use it in a phone, they block tethering. I've also found that 3 speeds are very poor when roaming.

If you get an orange or vodafone payg sim can you tether with those?

I was able to tether fine on the Orange sim - don't know about Vodafone. The rep in the Vodafone store suddenly lost his ability to speak English when I asked for the tourist sim that he didn't have, instead of the much more expensive offering he wanted me to buy ;) We had a few Faulty Towers moments (Que?) before I gave up and went back to the Orange shop to buy their sim.

Just something to remember too - all of the stores required a passport in order to buy any sim. Spanish regulations if you don't have a Spanish insurance number.

You have to bring your passport to the shop when your buying a sim in Spain

Got a Lebara sim in a phone shop with 3gb data last November, it worked out pretty good, 3g coverage was fine. Seem to remember it worked out at about €21.
