Building a Shed

    Hi All,

I currently have about 14 acres leased to a local farmer which I hope to farm myself in the future. I have no sheds with the land so was thinking of building something maybe capable of housing 10-15 heifers during the winter and maybe a small section for machinery storage. Has anybody done anything similar or maybe aware of my options?

    Thanks.

First thing first. It is unlikely you will qualify for grant aid unless you have a herd number I.in your own name and are a a qualified farmers. You have a number of different options alot will depend on your land quality from the point of can you continue to graze grass as long as you have it or do you need to house whennlamd gets wet.

Straw bedded would be the cheapest option but straw costs too much money if using for longer than 6-10 weeks/ year and ideally cannot be stored in same shed as cattle. A 3-4 bay shed would be adequate for cattle and machinery. If straw bedding you will need a deeper shed and two bags for cattle. A small tank under one bay would be enough for 15 heifers. Putting a tank under two bay's would not cost a whole lot more. I know that previously 1-2 precast concrete companies used to supply a precast tank about 18-20 feed by 12. Something like that would give you a bay and a half. If you do build a shed make sure you put in handling facilities at the same time adjacent or inside shed. If you are doing this make sure to do farm accounts as farm losses can be written off against income tax
