Leak in hot press

    Hi.
I've just noticed the following piece in the hot press is leaking water. The leak seems to be intermittent and luckily it's slow. I'm not sure how long it's being going on. I'm going to call a plumber but I'd appreciate any suggestions regarding the piece so I'm not clueless when the plumber arrives. It may be related to the immersion being left on as I noticed the water was very hot from the hot tap recently. The drip is coming from the cross-shaped piece on the top. The black mark on the plaster has been there forever I think.
    Any info appreciated.

    Its the Auto Air vent

it is an auto air vent, they are notorious for leaking. check if the circular white part will screw in to shut it off

    Thanks for the response.

What does an auto air vent do ?
I assume it needs prompt replacement.
    Is this potentially dangerous ?

Its supposed to release air caught in the heating system and is fitted at the highest point on the system usually on the flow on cylinder. No its not dangerous just dont leave it go either as it will eventully cause damage to your ceiling if left dripping

it automatically vents air from the system, theoretically once a heating system is up and running and not leaking they shouldnt be needed.
that said I would suggest you do get it replaced in a reasonable time frame

    Replies and explanations appreciated.
One other thing that may be related ( or not ).
I have to top up the boiler with water every now and again to maintain the pressure in the boiler.
Is it possible the two things are related ?

It is possible, when water is dripping out of the AAV the system is loosing water therefore the pressure in the system will drop after enough water has passed through the AAV

    they are related.
if you are lucky the water you are adding to top up the system is just to replace the water that is leaking out of the auto air vent, or you could have a leak and the addition of fresh water resulted in the auto air vent having to vent alot of water and this increased operation resulted in the auto air vent starting to leak.

if/when you get the auto air vent replaced you still have to top up the system then you have another leak somewhere
