Our electric hob has been giving us problems recently. The hot plates are heating up and glowing red and then start to turn on /off. So boiling a pot of pasta can take ages to cook. Anyone any ideas why this is happening?

This is actually how they work to stop the hob overheating. When the hob reaches a certain temperature it turns off until it cools to a certain temperature and turns back on again. Otherwise it would just continue to get hotter and hotter until it went on fire.
If there has been a change recently then maybe the thermostat may be playing up.
Is it ceramic, induction or the older electric rings?

Thanks a mill. It's an Electrolux ceramic hob.
