Hi, I am 19 and I look after my grandmother and have been told I should apply for Carers allowance as I am unable to take work as have to mind her as well as help my mother who has early onset Parkinsons. I am a college student but only have 13hours a week in which my family keep an eye on her duŕing. I was wondering if I would be eligible due to recieveing the SUSI non adjacent grant even though it only works out at approx €30 a week which is my only income.
    Thank you

Be living with, or in a position to provide full-time care and attention to a person in need of care who does not normally live in an institution. However, you may continue to be regarded as providing full-time care and attention, if you or the person being cared for is undergoing medical or other treatment in a hospital or other institution for a period not longer than 13 weeks.
Be habitually resident in the State.
Not live in a hospital, convalescent home or other similar institution.
Be at least 18 years old and
Not be engaged in employment, self-employment, training or education courses outside the home for more than 15 hours a week. During your absence, adequate care for the person requiring full-time care and attention must be arranged.
The means test for the Carer's Allowance involves assessing your income (excluding your home). €332.50 of your gross weekly income is not taken into account (or disregarded).

    Income Disregards

The following payments are not included in calculating reckonable income.
    ...
    Carer’s Allowance
Looks like you're eligible. Couldn't say for definite though.

You have the disregard the wrong way round.

Op the best thing is to call them and see.

Why do you think the income disregard is wrong, just out of interest?

It was the means text from the Susi website. The one they use to decide if op is eligible for THEIR payment.

Op is asking if she is eligible for carers allowance ehich she might be depending on savings other income etc.

    Its a bit tricky
The OP says they they are only engaged in the course for 13 hours per week, yet qualified for the SUSI grant which you can only get if you are participating in a full time course
    Hmmm
OP will have to show DSP that her course work only takes up 15 hours out of her week
The means test will be easily passed as they obviously don't have anything near the €320+ income per week

Oh that's interesting. Op you might have to explain both those things.

May have been a bit unclear.

The amount they get from the grant (30?) isn't over the carer's allowance limit (332) so that specifically won't preclude them from the allowance.
And the carer's allowance (if they get it) wont affect their grant as it's disregarded for calculating grants.

Be prepared for a long wait for a decision to be made - anything up to 39 weeks.

Not any more. 20 at the most, as long as you provide all information with application.
