I have the above boiler 9 years and it has started to leak from the overflow out the back of the house.

Had it serviced last month and the safety valve was replaced but he mentioned if it keeps leaking then the expansion vessel will need to be fixed, checking today the water is still coming out of the boiler to the pipe outside.

He gave a rough quote of 600 euro.

Should I shop around or look to get another boiler in?

is 600 euro all in the going rate for such a job? cheers

Way too much, have someone install an external expansion vessel and blank off the original in the boiler.
Even to replace the one in the boiler is still way too much (external vessels are cheaper)

At 9 years old, it would be economical to have the vessel replaced if the boiler is still in good condition, but a new boiler would be more efficient with gas usage by 10% or more.

    Can I ask two questions.

If its a newish boiler say under 2yrs and have the same problem, should you fix the internal vessel or just fix an external one.

Our old Vokera had the internal one replaced twice I think. Wasn't that expensive. Why would the plumber not have fitted an external one?

If you boiler is only 2 years old and you have replaced it already, it's possible the vessel is not large enough for your system (newer boiler have smaller vessels) and you may need an external one also.

It's an either or situation for replacement, on the newer boilers (most of them) they are more accessible, as with a lot of the older appliances, they were behind the boiler and required flue removal etc. to replace it, so external was easier.

Was yours not still under a warranty?

Still under warranty. I'm a bit puzzled by it all.

Why was the old boiler not fitted with external vessel instead of replacing the internal one. Why not fit a new boiler with them to start with. Why have an internal one at all.

My experience is older houses seem to have little problems with plumbing. New houses plumbing seems to be a constant problem. Everytime there's a fix there seems to be a different reason for it.

It would depend on the size (water content) of your system. The manufacturer puts a relatively small vessel in to protect 'the appliance' on a system boiler, usually about 8 ltrs. expansion, but this may not be adequate for a med/large house, but fine for a small house or apartment.
So your installer should size the house and fit an auxiliary external vessel as and when required.

For an older boiler, it is possible the vessel bladder has just failed with age, and required replacing.

As it was under warranty, that is why it was cheap for you.

I meant the old boiler or of warranty it wasn't that expensive. I dunno about the newer one.

    Thanks for the info. Appreciated.

Do oil boilers not have these vessels.
