Thinking of planting

Hi folks, my dad and I are thinking it is best to plant a 6 acre field that we have its hilly in parts and dosent grow great grass. Where thinking of planting but what can we expect the cost of planting to be?
What kind of tree should we pick ideally we would like hardwood.
On ear to the ground couple weeks ago I heard a farmer saying we was getting 1000 acre for oak. Is this correct?
    Much work in thinning?
    Do we plant ourselves?
    Thin ourselves?
The field is positioned between two old forestrys . We don't get paid on.
    Thanks.

Planting costs you nothing, the yearly premium is 249 per acre, a forestry company like FEL,SWS,Greenbelt ect will do all the work for you, thinning would be 15 to 20 years down the road depending on what you plant

The older forestry how much is in them and what species ? Might be worth having a forester look at these

I'm not sure how old the forestry is a lot of it would be on a steep slope. Access wouldnt be the easiest.
Is that 249 an acre for how long? Do you get more for different species. How much does it cost to thin.
Sorry for all the questions just not sure how it all works.

Would it be possible to clear the old forestry and plant again and claim grant??

The 249 is per year for 15 years and that's for oak which you will never see a return off of in terms of timber, sitka spruce would be best but you will get 206 per acre but you will be thinning between year 15 and 18 and making a return, there is no cost on thinning you would conduct a standing sale for €x per tonne

No that's not possible only if the were planted as xmas trees

If the land won't grow grass where would you expect the trees to get the nutrition from? You will grow timber but at what quality?

Either way it's a far better use (monetary wise) than grass for animals.
