i dunno, but of all the bad ideas i have read on boards this has to be at the top of the leader board, unless you have a background in physical sports

Don't listen to flutered. Plenty of people take up the game at your age with no background in sports. There's a lot of different levels to rugby, in the Leinster region there's 11 amateur divisions to give an idea of how varied it is.

To be honest, the more built up the area the better chance you'll have at finding a club that has a social or development team you can join.

I don't know that area very well so I'll let someone else comment on that.

If it's the Kildare/Meath area then North Kildare RFC between Maynooth and Kilcock would be the best known club around there I guess.

Loads of clubs though, sure to be one close to you.

no he is not a gladiator but for someone that age to get involved in the hard graft of tackling reciving the tackle etc without a background in physical sport is not to be advised, btw this is my last post on this, yes i do wish the op all the best, the old saying be carefull out there more than applies.

We take on plenty of people in that age group at our club every year and they do fine. Some of them have actually progressed on to a decent level in the mid-division team.

It's up to the club to coach players how to tackle and take contact. They're not just thrown into a match one day and expected to know it themselves.

I've known numerous guys who've taken up the sport at that age, no bother. Even older. Our 3rds team is littered with guys taking up the game at that age (as they often come from the same company/industry) and its never been a problem

Rubbish, I took rugby back up at 37 after a 15 year hiatus ;)

Rugby suits all shapes and sizes and abilities.

Your nearest clubs would be North kildare, clane and edenderry.

You could ask around and see what level their respective 2nds / 3rds teams are at. Or better still if you've any rugby playing friends or colleagues find out where they play.

What are you on about? I know lads in their mid 30s and even 40s who have started playing rugby for the first time and none of them has had any issues. If you join a team's 3rds or 4ths or 5ths or whatever it's more often than not a social team and nothing is expected of you. You can still learn, train and get better and move up the teams if have the drive though.

Lots of clubs nearby and most will have 3/4 adult teams with the lower teams very suitable for beginners.
    And completely ignore flutered

Yep I've played a couple of their social teams before. Great bunch of lads, they know their stuff, would be an ideal club to join for a beginner. They've a Div10 team you'd be able to play with.

Yeah Barnhall have had 5 teams for the last 10 years or so. Well established and good numbers. AIL, and 4 teams in Leinster metro leagues, divisions 2, 5, 7 and 10 or 11 I think

Yeah their Div 11 team won the final last season, now playing Div 10

Add to it Newbridge, Naas and Cill Dara to the list; three healthy close though distance wise they are at a push. Edenderry is your closest so try there first off.

I'm involved with Barnhall - you would be more than welcome- we have 2/3 beginners every year.

The 5ths play in Metro 10 - and it's not International rugby.

More than happy than put you onto the coach if you want - only thing I would suggest is that it is drawing towards seasons end - cups etc

You might want to check out the club, then play tag rugby which is run - just to get the basics down and get involved then.

But most clubs have an appropriate level to be honest.

    Go for it.

Appreciate the advice thank you... I'll get in touch with the club during the week and chat to them
