Have a few fields that are overrun with a mixture of rushes / nettles/ thistles and 1ft high furze bushes, depending where you look. Anyway thinking about investing in a weed wiper / licker for the back of quad. The land is in Glas so blanket spraying ain't allowed. Anyone recommend a trouble free reliable machine for €1500-€2000 bracket ? Or are they a waste of money ? Thanks in advance.

Had a look at some forums across the water and the logic ones seem popular. What type of money would the be ? Bristle ones seem to be better then the carpet ?

bristle is the way to go...you are coating the rush rather than just wiping over one side of it, often seen lads with the carpet going back over the track the other way again.....tedious enough job without having to pass over the rush twice

the one i bought was 3500 ( split between 3 of us) so have knocked good value out of it

another great advantage was the saving of mcpa used

Just priced the logic, €3500 alright. Even though a good product , Just outside my budget. You'd need a few lads buying it together alright.

Hire one for a day, give the fields a good wipe and see how you get on. Easier hiring for, say, two days a year than ploughing 3500 into a new one.
Unless you see an opportunity to start offering a weed wiping service in your area?

Anyone know where I'd hire one in the Midwest ?

It's cheaper around here to hire someone in with a quad and licker. They supply as well and haven't heard anyone complaining yet.
Every couple of years usually does it and you'd cover a lot of ground in a day or two.
Another thing to consider is the spraying course and certification of the applicator.

I don't know if it's come in yet tbh, I done the course last year but haven't needed spray yet.

I'm no good to you as I'm in Cavan. These are our local machinery dealers ....

Perhaps a dealer near you does similar?

i know down our way it's starting to show on cross compliance, esp if you are anywhere near a big tributary to main river

I got a weedlicker from Tuamgraney Engineering in East Clare a few years ago. It's the carpet roller type. Very well built with floatation tyres, 60 litre tank (I think), pump and hand lance. I think it cost me somewhere around €1800.
Works perfect for me anyway but I do hit the rushes from both sides to make a right job of it.

Tried to hire one around a load of places, from general plant hires to places that sell lickers, even tried places on the off chance they'd get one in secondhand, if they could rent it out. Probably going to bite the bullet and buy one. However cannt justify spending big money. Have about 20 acres that need cleaning up from rushes and creeping furze saplings ( about 6" -12" high) and nettles /thistles , After that it'll be just an annual Maintenance. Even if it takes the extra run, I'm thinking the ordinary basic carpet roller ones should do what I need ?

I made a weed wiper myself a few yeays ago. Carpet type. Cost 400 in parts plus stuff lying around the yard.

Things i learnt which might help you.
The carpet rollar works but the brush /bristle type is meant to work a lot better.
When using the carpet type on slopes you need to work up and down the slope as the soaked carpet will drip when working across the slope. The brush type isnt meant to do this.
Regarding the quad sprayer/pump. People have a lot of bother with cheap pumps. I was told one of the best pumps you can buy is a shurflo pump.
I wouldnt rate the draper quad sprayer pump on that weed wiper long term.
