Van - private insurance, commercial tax

It seems ro be very difficult now to get commercial insurance on a small run about van. Seem to be getting stricter on the rules. Been declined by a good few companies, and even one that quoted before Christmas declined now.Unless you carry tools or goods they won't insure you. I know you can make up a story but I'd imagine your insurance would be null and void if anything happened. Does anyone know if you can insure a small van privately and tax it commercially. Reason for commercial tax would be engine size of 1.6.

The issue I've had, and imagine you will to, is that local authorities now look for a copy of your insurance cert that states you are insured to use the vehicle for commercial use in order to tax it commercially. Privately insured vehicles (depending on the class of use) are generally only covered for social, domestic and commuting.

if you aren't using it commercially , aren't you already making up a story to be looking for commercial tax?

What did you end up doing?

    Insured and taxed it commercially.

    The answer is NO.
You need to present your commercial insurance policy to the MTO plus an RF111A to tax it. Also must have a current CVRT.

A small van would have been nice, but it sounds like its too much bother.

Have you checked how much private tax is? It may not be much different to commercial .

1.6 hdi, so I think that is 544 a year. So I suppose about 200 more than commercial. I wonder how easy is it to change to private tax and insurance and still have it cvrt?

Some vehicles based on body type require a CVRT and not an nct.

I'd imagine berlingo/partner would be cvrt even if taxed and insured private.

The occup that you tell Insurance the use is for and tax occupation use should be same otherwise u are defrauding some dept.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,056 ✭✭✭gooner99

Very true. Someone said on another thread they have reduced the number of qualifying occupations.

Occup list actually still the same for 14yrs now from what I see. But they are being more strict to those that are trades-personnel against the

"im not doing any trade just private use"

Most of those cases I see are actually doing jobs they don't want to declare. Food delivery guys, landscape gardeners to name a few

You can't get private insurance on a commercial vehicle. If it is a commercial it needs to have a valid cvrt and the insurance will have to be a commercial policy, albeit it might be one that just has social, domestic & pleasure use. Mine does anyway. Crewcab van, used only for family use. Fully declared as such and private tax rates paid every year.

Note that if you want to / have to pay private tax on a commercial vehicle it will always be on the engine size rates, regardless of the year of manufacture. Hence my limit of 2.0 litre.

The main issue you will find is the ever decreasing number of insurance companies (I'm down to just one option at this stage) that will quote for a commercial vehicle not being used in connection with a trade. And you are even more penalized if its a crewcab. The result of this is no bargaining or shopping around come renewal time, just bend over and let them at it!

The irony is that a mate who uses his crewcab every day for work, so must be a higher risk, pays a vastly lower premium than i do, ferrying the kids to school and parking the feckin thing outside of work everyday in a nice secure carpark.

    No logic at all.
