Hi lads, just wondering what is my mother entitled to as she is OAP this april. She is in receipt of a HSE pension as she is a retired nurse. My father is a retired postman. She just wondering about :will HSE pension affect her state pension, can she get free travel allowance, fuel/tv license/phone allowance. etc?

    Regards,
    Anto

Thanks mp22, was just looking for a rough gist. Not too sure about all the details myself. Appreciate that this is not legal advice but kinda wondering so I'd have something to say to her.

Your mother is going to be 66?
She is already getting a Nurses pension and your father is getting a PO pension.
Is your father 66+? Is he getting a State pension already as well as his PO pension?
Did your mother ever work in the private sector?

Thanks infogiver. No, she is coming on 66 this April. My father is 64. AFAIK the are both receiving their workplace pensions. No, she never worked privately. She was just wondering about things like travel allowance, fuel/heating/tv license etc.

    Thanks,
    Anto

    Ok I got it.
So if she never worked in the private sector then it is unlikely she has the A grade PRSI requirements needed to apply for a Contributory Pension.
So she can apply for a Non Con pension but that will be means tested against her and your dads current income and savings and other property they might own, shares, investments etc.
Look. It won't take long . Fill up for her right now both a Contributory and a Non Contributory pension application form and fire them in and see what happens.
Your not too sure I think wether you mam worked continuously for the HSE or not.
At 66 she will get the free travel pass, make sure it says FT+S in the top left hand corner so your dad can travel with her
What she needs to do is go to her local SW office to organise getting her PSC which will contain her free travel
As regards the electricity allowance and the free tv license then if they don't qualify for either state pension then that will depend on
    1. Who else lives with your parents
    2. A means test

The fuel allowance is also means tested

Thanks infogiver, yeah i'll pop over to her there in awhile. So basically, just horse all forms into SW office and give her a small kick up the bottom RE: getting bank statements, utility bills, etc.?

    Nice one,

Each pension form post to the respective sections in Sligo
She should apply to have your dad added to as her dependent on each form
For the non con she needs bank statements and payslips for herself and for your dad
For the con pension just for your dad
Really just follow each application form from beginning to end all the instructions are there
As outgoings aren't taken into account there's no need for utility bills
