Do schools offer shadowing?

... or do you need to know someone?

I'm considering a career in Primary School teaching but would like to shadow a bit first. Is this something schools would normally offer if you contacted them? I know my primary school would most likely be happy to oblige but it's very far away from where I live now.

Also, how difficult is it to secure a permanent job? Is there a lot of subbing? I am literally just starting to do my research so apologies for my lack of knowledge! Any info would be great.

They will need to have you garda vetted before allowing you to shadow/assist.
There is no harm in asking.
If you are staying in Ireland it is very difficult to secure a permanent job at the moment.

Fair play to you for being proactive and looking to see what teaching actually is - as opposed to what it's perceived to be.

At present, it's pretty much impossible to get a permanent job. And not looking much better over the next while. There's a shortage of subs for day to day work at present, as many of those qualified teachers who couldn't get work here or survive on the cuts imposed to terms and conditions either went abroad or left teaching and this last year was the switch from the 3 to 5 year B.Ed and longer PME- but they will all be coming on stream before the summer again. Permanent jobs will often have to be offered to those with panel rights, so you won't even get a crack at an interview.

No school will take you without garda vetting, it's simply not allowed. Many schools have had so many students in and for so much longer due to the longer stints students have to do on placement, that they may not simply have space. Our own school is inundated with requests - we try to help where we can but even trying to accommodate our own past pupils is difficult. I would think the same applies in many schools.

The other thing to consider it that conditions for teachers are constantly being eroded. The amount of paperwork needed is growing by the minute. The new language curriculum is bringing in English style tick/targets/testing- and it's going to be the same once the other revised subject areas come into being. To remain registered with the teaching council, doing courses at your own cost and on your own time will soon be compulsory.

I'm sorry if that all sounds negative , but you need to be aware of the realities.
If , after all of that, you still feel teaching is for you, then absolutely go for it. It's not the easy number some people believe, no two days are the same, you need to constantly adapt, you need to think on your feet and it can be the greatest feeling in the world to see a child suddenly "get" something.
