German parliament legalizes cannabis for medical consumption

In a landmark bill, members of Germany's parliament voted unanimously on Thursday to legalize the use of medical marijuana.
Marlene Mortler, the German government's drug commissioner, had lobbied for the decision to allow patients to buy cannabis from their local pharmacy with a doctor's prescription.
"It's a great addition for patients who have waited for this a long time," Mortler said.

Mortler: "More people should have access to medicinal cannabis"
Doctors have stated that marijuana can benefit cancer patients who are feeling nauseous after chemotherapy, and it also is believed the drug helps fight a lack of appetite and the weight loss that some tumor patients experience. Cannabis can additionally alleviate symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis.
Opposition parties in Germany like the Greens and the Left Party had long fought for legalization.

In countries like France and Canada, as well as in several US states, purchasing cannabis with a prescription is already possible.
In Germany, the costs of the dried cannabis flower buds and cannabis extracts will be covered by health insurance for patients who have no other treatment options.

We can't be too far behind now...

As long as it's not made available on the medical card.

Why not? only people that are sick can be prescribed. Just because someone has a medical card doesn't mean they will weed.

That's a good point, probably not.

What I wouldn't like to see is scumbags, with feck all wrong with them, milking like they usually do and getting free gear.

Over 70 million Americans now live in states where cannabis is completely legal.

Not medicinal . Not "decriminalised". But fully legal for any purpose.

That's the way its going, and hopefully ireland will be a leader and won't drag its feet.

If you went anywhere and asked for "gear" it wouldn't be cannabis you're getting....

hmm, I have to cover the first €600 of medical costs in a calendar year before I can make a claim to my health insurance, that's a lot of weed to get through before I reef the benefits

I foresee a massive growth in whatever health problems cannabis helps.

That bill has to go before the Oireachtas yet, it's with them at the moment. If everything goes smoothly but this been Ireland it won't, it'll be legal by Easter.

It'll never get through in it's current format.

Smoke weed everyday ( for my back ! ).

About time though, the world won't end because a medicinal cannabis law is brought in.

Of course someone had to bring up medical card users, not the scroungers on the medical card, don't give them weed that my tax pays for. Usual stuff.

I'm curious if someone who smokes weed would be willing to switch to medicinal cannabis - e.g. oil.

They'd take the hand off you for some.

Yes, absolutely. The oil can be vaped, obviously much healthier than smoking.

The bill itself is worth a read, although it will see some major changes I'd presume.
