Internal promotion confusion

I'll try and keep this short. Applied for a job in work back in November. This is a big role which would see me realise my ambition of getting into management. It is a senior role in the organisation. I have been there for over 3 years at this point and have been promoted in my department already.

Anyway, there were a few of us that went for this role. Along with the few I knew about, it turns out that a recent recruit who is only 1 year out of college and brought in for a specific short term role was told to go for the job. He, lets call him (A) was told to apply by a person with serious influence in the organisation. This person has a habit of 'hand picking' people for roles that he knows will not challenge him and who general consensus agrees are weak candidates but because they may have some connection to this person, they normally succeed in getting the jobs. As I'm sure you may all agree, this was a serious worry to me. Even thought I didn't see him as much competition for the role given my experience and qualifications, it worried me that I had seen it before. Just as I was on the cusp of making a breakthrough, it was about to be snatched from my fingertips.

Anyway, we all went for the job. I was told I interviewed very well and they were moving me to the next step. This young chap was also progressed to the next stage along with another lad who lacked the technical background for the job but had good qualifications in other fields.Lets call him (B). I considered myself and this man (B) to be the front runners. That was the consensus among many senior people in the business I discussed this with.

We were told that the role would be filled by year's end and before the winter shut down. I was excited to learn my fate. I would be overjoyed to get the job of course, but if (B) got it I would not begrudge him. I have a good relationship with him and he is deserving of his opportunity too. Possibly more than myself if I am to be honest. I may as well put it out there that I would be very disillusioned if (A) got the job......

Christmas came and passed. No word. Week 1 came and passed with no word.

Week 2 came and passed with no word. I tried mailing the Hiring Manager this eek to ask for an update as to how the process was moving along. This mail went ignored.

Week 3 is now passed with no word. I asked the receptionist in work if the Hiring Manager was in work this week and was told yes. I asked if he might pick up the phone to ask the hiring manager if he could spare a few minutes to have a quick chat. He told the receptionist that he was busy today and tomorrow and couldn't spare a few minutes. The receptionist was told to ask liase with me to figure out a day next week when I was in to arrange a sit down. After I left the site, I got a mail from the receptionist that the hiring manager had come back to say his diary was full next week and if I told him the reason behind why I wanted a meeting, he may be able to fit me in the following week, possibly!

Whats going on here? There was great communication before Xmas. I'm beginning to wonder is there a battle going on behind the scenes - hiring manager wants me but the influential guy who hand picks his own people wants candidate (A). I'm confused here lads. MY head is wrecked. The hiring manager seems as this point to have shut down the lines of communication between us?

What would you do in my situation?

    Sit tight.

If there's a battle, then the managers need to fight it among themselves. If you don't have visibility of what the players are up to, you could make things worse by blundering into it.

And possibly the hiring manager is just insanely busy with some other shyte, and really cannot progress it at the moment.

Candidate A (the hand picked) got the job.

If this is the same company you've posted about before,it's not all that surprising I'm afraid

Yep. One and the same. This one was different, there were a number of heavy hitters in for this role. Its going to cause a lot of folks to consider if they are wasting their time in the place. Myself included.......
