Job is Making me Depressed: Notice Period

I started a job about 3 months ago and it was outlined as this amazing opportunity for someone like me.. but as with most good things, not all is as it seems.

The management are horrible, I mean the type of general manager who scoffs at you in a meeting full of people and rolls here eyes at employees when they are trying to talk to her. Just completely unapproachable. Everything is micro-managed to a tee. The type of people who will purposefully embarrass you as well..

Everybody is walking all over me and taking advantage of the 'newbie' status getting me to check toilets, do their printing, post letters for them..buy their shopping!!. There is nobody at all who is of a similar age to me to event vent to and I feel very trapped in there and there is absolutely no progression. I come home from there feeling absolutely worthless and that I am just their slave of sorts. I am actually a social, happy, friendly person but this place has taken it all away from me. I'm only in the office with one other person as well - with no windows. I haven't been thanked once for any of the things I have done (which are not in my job description).

Lately, I have been actually physically sick too and the doctor suggested it could be from work. The last month I have been seriously depressed, and I actually dread going into work, I have been crying on the phone to my girlfriend, I don't want to socialise or eat or do anything I usually would.

So I have decided that next week I want to hand in my notice, it only is a one week notice period but I don't think I can go back for a full week for my head. Can I give in notice with immediate effect and say that it's due to personal circumstance? Which it is as my health is being severely effected.. Can they make me work the full week, what are the consequences if I don't? Went to the doctor last week so unsure if I can go back to him and ask him to write something for me - only new to the area (Don't want a reference)

I know this might all sound ridiculous to some but it's really taking it's toll on me and my relationships.

Absolutely go back to the doctor and ask him to sign you out sick. That way, you'll be eligible for the dole straight away - otherwise it would be a 9-week standdown.

And then hand in your notice while you're out sick. No need to work there any longer.

You poor thing. Leave tomorrow, you wont regret doing it when looking back. Leaving now or leaving in a week means nothing in the grand scheme of life. If your on probation i understand either party can terminate with immediate effect, though am open to correction

    Best.of.luck

    Absolutely do this!

If it's this bad after only 3 months then you're way better off getting out of there.

I got stuck in a job I hated for years because they made me feel worthless and I lost a lot of self confidence. Get out, don't look back

Phone is sick now. Go to the doctor and tell him that you are depressed. Convince him/her that you need to get out of work.

Do not stay there. I've been where you are in the past and I regret it to this day. We have one life and one only. Don't let a single day of that life be in a situation which makes you unhappy. Its only a job. Get a new one. I would caution however of going sick and not going back. You will need to get another job. This task will be easier if you are in a job. Leaving will bring difficult questions at interview. Take a few days off, look after yourself. Go for walks. Spend time with family. Have sex. Get drunk. Face back in 7 days from now safe in the knowledge that you are on the way out. That mental shift will help you cope.

You won't be eligible for the Dole if you are sick as it implies you aren't available for work.
As the OP is within probation, it's most unlikely they won't get paid sick-pay.

The simple answer is to remember that the job is not a prison sentence, you can get out whenever you want. So just look for another job and in the meantime, just make yourself happy thinking you won't have to put up with the crap forever.

The doctor will certify the op as fit to return to work the next day.

The op will get social welfare from the day he/she is signed as fit to work.

My advice is leave the nightmare job, and move onwards and upwards. You don't need your last employer to be your reference if it's only 3 months employment

Thanks for all the support, I am going to leave on Monday and give in a resignation letter with immediate effect. It is good to know that people think I'm doing the right thing - I just needed a little reassurance from people (who don't necessarily know me). So thank you all so much!

    Can I ask?

Is this your first job? Have you a qualification or are you just starting out from leaving school?

I'm not dismissing your position at all but looking for some perspective. :)

No it's far from my first job - I worked in a a job for 4 years which I loved to pieces and have had various different part time jobs over the years since I was 16, and I'm now 25. I have a masters - so it's definitely not that I am afraid of the work or don't know how to get on with people - all my jobs were people orientated. It's the place I am in at the moment - but I handed in my notice and will never ever need to go back - thankfully!
