When is she 4? Could she start school when the others do?

Cut off dates for schools are different to ecce and vary from place to place. Our local school takes children who are four by Sept.

I think the issue lies with the "play" school- the clue should be in the name, what the heck are children doing with "workbooks" in pre-school? No wonder so many children get fed up at such an early age. Síolta and Aistear prgrammes are what they should be out, I'd very much question this place as being reputable. The adult to child ratio in preschool is more than sufficient for play based learning.Children shouldn't be doing workbook until formal schooling- if even then- but until the DES reduces infant class sizes they are in many cases a necessary evil.

ETA I'd be pretty sure this place isn't a proper Montessori, it completely flies in the face of Monti principles.
"In early childhood, Montessori students learn through sensory-motor activities, working with materials that develop their cognitive powers through direct experience: seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling, touching, and movement."
    No mention of workbooks.

Thanks for reply. I know this place is a proper Montessori, the longest running in our area and comes highly recommended by all. I think these workbooks fall under optional extras, which the only mention I can find on early childhood website is that if certain children aren't participating then they need to be supervised by someone else while the others are occupied by the teacher. I don't think there are enough guidelines yet out for the new two year programme, just that is it now phased over two years..although being this place with X amount of years of experience, I would have assumed they would have planned accordingly for this. had i of known this meant my child sitting there bored for the first year, I wouldn't have sent her until next year then!
