What are the two winches for??

What are the two winches for??

They appear to raise some kinda 'door' to leave the sheep stick their heads out to feed, is that it?
I assume you close it afterwards to allow you to put out the feed unhindered by ewes sticking their heads out when you feed again?

To be honest - these would be very fancy to me ;)

But then I wouldn't have great facilites... :)

Do you mind me asking what size are the pens and how many do they hold?

There 22 feet deep and the bay is eighteen wide. The walkway is 2ft so two pens 8x 22ft. You'd fit 18 ewes each side easily

A sheep shed needs to be 32ft at least wide internal to be easy to work, you can have a 10ft deep pen either side and 12 ft feeding passage.
Your design of shed would be cheaper, but you'll be forever regretting that you didn't spend that bit more. I've a 60 by 22 with those walkthrough troughs and it was a PITA to throw silage into them

we had to fit this into existing yard

54 ft wide and passage way is 14 ft. pens on other side double as calving / calf pens from mid february onwards

Lovely looking job. How many ewes can you hold per pen. Would you ever consider shearing ewes for extra space.

Its the easiest and cheepest way I can fit it into an exiting hayshed. The plan is to drop a bale into a feeder and let them do the work until I put a few € together for pens. Do you have a PIC of your set up?

Each side of the shed is 60 by 22

They look like they're marked for singles , but they're actually doubles and triplets.
The red mark is to remind us to tag the ewe lambs out of them as eligible to be considered as replacements

As you can see the trough frame are easy and cheap to make, 2inch timber on the base and `6 by 1 on the side, those troughs are about 20 years old and have all the signs

    ,

Yes , all the other sheds were built for something other than sheep, so are only conversions, I lamb most in that shed, very easy to catch, you don't set the place mad trying to catch them. also it's near the individual pens

Rangler you have fabelous stock. There will be no problems get top prices in your dispersal sale next year if you go ahead with it.

Why do you leave such a large space for feeding. Are the pens on the left not very small?

I'd say it's the camera giving a peculiar perspective, the feeding passage is 10ft, and the pens are 12ft the shed was kitted out when i use to have to leave in grabs of silage and had to drive the tractor to the far end, I only roll out a bale of straw now

Decided to change the type of feeders we use for silage. A lot less waste with this one and a lot safer when putting in a bale
