Replace Ring beam support ?

Getting some work done that involves knocking the back wall of the house and building an extension to make one big room. The house is an old 60s simi-D.

Originally the plans have a RSJ to support the house after removing the back wall. On knocking the wall , the builder has found a ring beam supporting the first floors.

Is it wise to replace the ring beam with steel ? Is the ring beam suitable support for the first floor and roof on its own ?

Your Engineer will answer that question.

Arch will be out this week to take a look. Just wanted to get some ideas if better to push for steel or not ? Would a ring beam have been designed to support the top floors back when the house was built ?

Most likely or to offer some form of restraint.
I would remove and use steel as the ring beam needs to be resting on something over that span so I'd say it would deflect.

Use steel, but the cutting of the ring beam needs to be checked by the engineer to ensure you don't weaken the remaining ring beam n
