1.6D Volvo S40 engine trouble

I drive a 2005 Volvo S40 16D (Diesel) and I'm having trouble diagnosing a problem with it. There is an 'anti-skid service required' warning on the dash along with the engine light coming on and off. The car will drive perfect for random periods of time (no more that 15-20 miles) however, it will often begin to make a chugging action particularly at low revs and there is random power loss where you can hear the boost not working leading to a loss of power. I have changed the glow plugs and map sensor already. Is there anyone with any knowledge of this problem? Could it be a problem with fuel or O2 sensor? Thanks in advance.

You need to get the fault codes read. It'll be cheaper than replacing parts on a hit-n-hope basis.

Hi, yeah I got it read and it came up as a fault with the map sensor, I replaced it and it didn't fix the problem, I have checked codes again and it seems to be reading a fault with the 02 sensor and egr, having removed the egr it looks clean so I'm wondering whether replaceing both of these parts will fix the problem? Having said that, these faults didn't come up when I first read codes a little over a week ago to replace the map sensor

What is it being scanned with? AFAIK those old Volvo diesels don't have an O2 sensor. So if O2 sensor codes are reported, I'm wondering if the problem is the scan tool not resolving the codes properly, and critically, ignoring manufacturer specific codes that will be more descriptive than bog standard OBD ones.

Can you post the exact codes you're getting here?

Just because it came up with MAP sensor doesn't mean it's broken. It could be working perfectly fine and you might have a hole in a vacuum pipe attached to the manifold. If the MAP sensor gets readings outside its set parameters and throws on the engine light.
You'll need to see live data of the map sensor and lambda probes to see if there is any issue.

Get the codes read somewhere where they know how to troubleshoot and not just change random parts.

As the problem is intermittent its hard to determine what exactly the issue is as fault codes coming up are related to the glow plug relay and 02 sensor. Talking to a few garages they've concluded that the issue is probably down to either the egr, dpf, air flow meter or an abs sensor. Anyone got any history with dealing with problems related to these parts?

Is there an elyos tank in these? If it does and the tank is empty it can cause power loss problems and the dpf cant regenerate properly.

I know Mazda, Peugeot and Citroen have these tanks fitted with the same engine as yours.

Also if the tank is empty and you have it refilled you need to get someone with a good diagnostics kit to let the car know the tank has been filled.

This guy is re-filling it on a 2.0 ltr but the process is the same on the 1.6.

Manifold vacuum pipe on a diesel?

Update: turned out to be the air flow meter. Got one off a the same engine in a 1.6 peugoet! After changing this, the car now drives 100% no chugging or loss of power (the fault code for the glow plugs is a separate matter)

Sorry for digging up old thread but might be useful to someone, I had very similar problem with my v50, going into low power mode for no apparent reason with no fault codes showing and would not go over 2,800revs, especially during cold weather below 2c, Changed fuel filter and problem solved
