Are you required to use a tee?

As it says in the title, when teeing off, is there a requirement to use a tee?
Hitting off bare ground, I have more control on the ball and have less mi****s, whereas with a tee, I am getting under the ball a little too much, often leaving my shots short. I've adjusted tee height with the same result.
Just wondering if there is anything in the rules about it, obviously the green keepers would prefer if I used one!

No, you don't have to use one

No you don't have to use one.

I'm pretty sure I've seen some clubs who have local rule that a tee must be used on par 3s, maybe that's just a winter thing, open to correction.

Will this not impact on distance though? I.e. not being able to use your driver

I'm guessing he is referring to irons here.

I can't use a driver without a tee but my accuracy and distance when using a 3 wood without a tee from the tee box far outweighs the complete inconsistency I experience when using a driver with a tee.

Unless it's a local rule, no.
If I had to hit a wedge or less into a par 3, I'd hit it from the ground.

I remember Lee Westwood hitting a 3w off the tee box, he place the ball on the ground, then stood on it to made a depression in the ground for the ball to sit in. He was going for a low thinny cut.

As above, unless subject to a local rule, Moate have one that you must use a tee on the par 3's

why would you not want to use a tee????

OP, if I were you I'd be going to see somebody about it. A tee will give you advantage, if you can't use one effectively, then there is something wrong with your swing.

Maybe I'm paranoid, but if you're not allowed to use a tee for other shots there must be a reason for it - it's giving you an advantage! I know some people rather hitting off the deck for irons, but I think they're mad.

I don't understand the local rule to enforce a tee on par 3's. If I have an 8-iron in my hand I'm going to do the same damage with a divot whether the ball is on a tee or not?

I think Laura Davies used to create a tee with the ground. As in she'd cut a divot out with an iron, arrange this so it's perpendicular to the ground and place the ball on that.

It might be legal, but I'd say a local groundsman would throttle you if he caught you.

It's actually mandatory to not use a tee...

...assuming you're an absolute d*ckhead desperate to show off and willing to accept a significant disadvantage, making the hole unnecessarily more difficult, just for a chance to look like a super deadly ball striker.

For bonus points, nonchalantly drop the ball from about waist high and just play it as it lies, thus sending the message to your opponents or playing partners that you are such a good player, you don't even care what kind of lie you get.

GCW behaviour of the highest order.

She use to do this for her Driver too!

Actually that was revoked years ago.

Played with a retired guy in a scratch cup last year that did this.
Every club including driver, he was a member too
Mad stuff, especially for provisionals with his driver - he went a dug up a new mound

Jack Nicklaus always said why wouldn't you want to give yourself a perfect lie every time??

The tee doesn't have to be standing up above ground level you know

    Agree with posts above.

Anyone not using a tee, needs a serious chat with themselves or Jack Nicklaus.

If you studied it - again armchair golf physics

More golfers will tend to hit up and have a more sweeping action.

Accepted a player who hits down on the ball all the time will have a divot.

But a certain amount will sweep more and results in less damage . Would be a good study - I'd say less damage (imo)

I tend to tee high enough for certain par 3s - I want more height and the ball to stop quicker at certain times.

when you think about it, it is probably something that should be practiced a bit.

What fix says there about teeing the ball high for certain par 3's makes a lot of sense. maybe a shorter hole <100yd get that ball in the air as high as you can to come down quickly and get less roll out. medium par 3's tee the ball low, just enough to leave you with a sweeping motion to brush the ball away and then for longer holes 5 iron up say, you might want it teed a bit higher - not to high though.

now I never understand when I see a guy come out with 2 or even 3 tees stuck into each other to leave the ball about 3 inches above the ground.... wtf is that all about! they need to get themselves seen to as much as the guy who uses no tee

This is bang on. The pro's tee up the ball so there has to be a reason for that.

There are several pro's that don't tee up on the par 3's. Sometimes I do it myself and it works better from me.

Sometimes these strange little things just work well for people and they might as well keep them going for a while. Like not using a tee, or one of the pros closing their eyes while putting, or a friend of mine who puts with his feet together.
